James Fadden (who I met at a recent NITLE conference) writes his own blog Thoughts and Experiments and contributes to the group blog techNOcool. In a recent post in the latter he talks a bit about the term Web 2.0. It’s a slippery terms and the exact meaning varies depending on who you ask (and probably who you’re trying to answer), but James does a great job of summing up the term (as I understand it) in a simple sentence: “web 2.0 is characterized by programs that provide people the chance to create, share, and connect”. The details and technologies of how people do that creating, sharing, and connecting is still being explored and developed, but that’s all detail. To borrow a couple of concepts from gaming, web 2.0 represents an over-arching strategy rather than the specific tactics involved in implementing that strategy.
